OUR FIRST CHALLENGE

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has a formidable mission: to provide quality, cost-efficient, and timely care and benefits to America’s 22 million veterans. These benefits and services require an effective—and secure—digital infrastructure. The VA’s Office of Information and Technology (OIT) and Veterans Health Affairs (VHA) works to ensure the agency has the necessary IT tools, services and infrastructure to support our nation’s veterans, including safeguarding the private medical and personal information they entrust with the Department. VA is embarking on a large-scale, multi-year effort to implement an electronic health records system, and OIT and VHA are collaborating on this reform effort.

THIS TRANSFORMATION REQUIRES A CONSISTENT FLOW OF TALENT

To achieve its mission, OIT and VA must attract and employ experienced talent that can lend their expertise to current and future initiatives. Across the United States, there is a high demand for expertise in the healthcare industry, limiting available talent. In addition, OIT and VA are competing with other Federal agencies, as well as the private sector. As a result, OIT must have a program in place to recruit experts and ensure that they are both aligned to the vision of the program and positioned to deliver high quality products that support VA efforts and ultimately benefit veterans.
